Idaho has five pioneer trails such as the Oregon Trail and the California Trail. President Lincoln signed the act to establish the Idaho Territory on March 4th, 1863. The capital for the territory was Lewiston. However, the capital was moved to Boise in 1865. Idaho became the 43rd state on July 3, 1890. It was signed into law by President Benjamin Harrison.

Idaho's Name

There are a variety of stories of how Idaho got its name. Some people believed that the Idaho Territory received the name from the Indian name E-Dah-Hoe. It means “gem of the mountains.” Other people believed that it was a name from Colorado.

Idaho's State Flag

Idaho is the only state to have a flag seal designed by a woman. The seal was adopted on March 14, 1891 and became part of the Idaho flag on March 12, 1907. Her name was Emma Edwards Green. She was the only woman who achieved distinction in the United States. She also handed honorarium by Governor Noman B. Wiley on March 5, 1891.
