Web Development Perceptions

After reading through Chapter one, I have learned about deprecated code, inserting characters, use of the abbreviation element and how validate xhtml code using the wc3 website. In addition, the use of strict xhtml and why the changes were made for standardization. My current perception on web design is that there are many specialty areas of web design. As the wave of companies putting office automation on their web sites, programmers are needed to for companies to apply the latest web development technologies to their sites. The need for specialty programs for Java, VB, C and Delphi rograms that are or could be incorporated and a broad knowledge of different languages is needed to do complex web programming such as using web for dynamic databases, online training, and online office applications. Future web development also is finding ways of incorporating web development with phone and web integration. I will be applying what I learn this semester in being able to create and apply cascading style sheets versus the “old” way I have been creating web sites, using tables. After this class is completed, I expect to provide better support for our internal and external web sites. In addition, I volunteer my time to provide web sites for non-profit organizations.

HTML History

Although Chapter 2 was pretty much a review, I thought the book did a good job in explaining relative and absolute paths. In addition, I learned about sibling folders. The area element was a new element, although I had done hotspots in the past, but only once on a map. The id attribute is one that I forgot existed. In the book the use the "go to top" to link to the top of the page or used aa graphic to go to the top of the page, I have not seen many web pages use the “back to top” link. In reading through the history of HTML and the internet, I had flashbacks of using many of the protocols, services and browsers that were used on the internet. The first browser I used was Mosaic in 1995. The web pages in the mid 90’s were very basic and not used universally. Not until HTML 2 was released, that html tags began to take on consistency and as each version change, more tags added. In the 15 years since I first used the web, it amazes me to see how the browser use and html is used currently. As html progressed, and companies began creating propriety markup tags, the Browser wars in full swing between IE and Netscape. In 1998, antitrust was filed against Microsoft for bundling their browser with their operating system software, of which Microsoft lost then settled.
